Aug 31, 2022, 13:00 PM

Joe Mazza, host of HGTV’s Home Inspector Joe, is an expert home inspector with a 20-year construction background and a sixth sense for safety. He runs Exclusive Home Inspection in Westchester, New York, and his job is to ensure his clients don’t move into an unsafe home. On HGTV, he works with his design partner to help house hunters achieve their dream home designs while also repairing high priority safety issues. Joe posts videos online giving homeowners advice on what to look for in their own home and sharing tips for them to be their own best home safety advocate. We talked to Joe before he appears at the Jacksonville Home + Patio Show and got him to share some homeowner tips, along with telling us about some of his favorite things!

1. What tool should every homeowner own?

Honestly, a toolbox with everything in it lol. A multi-purpose screwdriver with multiple attachments is a must have and great place to start. But really, there are so many must-have tools for homeowners I'd have to push for just getting the full thing.

2. Tell us about your pets.

I love my Rosie puppy. She’s a Cavapoo and hands down the kindest smartest pup 🙏🏻🙏🏻. I truly never knew the love a dog could give until I got Rosie.

3. What are your best landscaping tips?

Cut all shrubs away from your siding and any branches off, and away from your roof. Make sure the land around your home is pitched away to divert water away from the house!

4. Favorite room in your home?

My favorite room in my home is actually the pit outside on my deck. It is a covered metal roof gazebo that’s screened in with a propane fire pit and TV set up. That's gotta be my must have.

5. Which HGTV/DIY Network star would you most like to work with, and why?

Mike Pyle from Inside Out. For starters, it's not like we look alike or anything. Jokes aside, he seems like a down to earth guy with a great eye for outdoor use and landscaping. Like I said, my outdoor area is my favorite space in my house so I'd love to get some extra pointers from the pro himself.

6. What's your favorite part about speaking at a home show?

My favorite part is the interactions I get to have with everyone. I meet so many amazing people and I love getting to share my tips on home safety and talk about my own story working in this field. I'm honestly just a people person though, so connecting with people and just sharing the journey that I'm on with them is such a highlight for me.

7. What project are you currently working on?

I'm currently working on my home gym set up. I’ve been working a lot and making it to the gym is just not happening. So having my own gym I can workout in is perfect.

8. What is an outdated home trend you hope doesn't come back?

I hope this doesn't offend anyone. BUT, I really disliked the era of the pink tiled bathrooms along with the pink tubs, sinks and toilets... yeah, I pray that doesn't come back.

9. Personal Hobbies?

One of my biggest hobbies is getting out on my 2021 Indian Scout Bobber and going for long rides to clear my mind and enjoy the scenery. I haven't been able to ride in a few months since I had spinal fusion surgery. But as soon as my doctor clears me, it's the first thing on my list.

10. Pet Peeve?

My biggest pet peeve while I'm inspecting a home has to be dirty homes and crawl spaces. Both things lead to spiders and spiders are my #1 fear and enemy in this world.
